The Orting City Council handled deputy mayor housekeeping at its Jan. 14 meeting, appointing Greg Hogan to serve as the interim deputy mayor for January to preside over a council study session and conducting an election for the annual deputy mayor term starting Feb. 1.
After nominations, the council used a roll-call-style vote and elected Councilmember Jeff Sprowl to be deputy mayor for the Feb. 1–Jan. 31, 2027 term by a 5–2 vote. The clerk explained the procedural need for a deputy mayor to chair the nomination process and run the February transition if necessary.
Mayor Brennan also asked for volunteers to form an ad hoc committee to recommend a six-month modification to committee structures and meeting times to improve council effectiveness. Councilmembers agreed to a three-member ad hoc committee—Councilmembers Hogan, Tracy and Sprowl—to develop recommendations and to rotate new councilmembers through committees in the interim while the larger decisions are worked out.
