The Chehalis City Council voted March 9 to accept a $570,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to construct a 55‑stall parking lot adjacent to Recreation Park Phase 3.
City staff said the grant (B23‑CP‑WA1527) requires no local match and will move the city to the next step of bidding and design. ‘‘The grant award is $570,000 … there’s no match required and this helps us to initiate the next process for bid and moving forward with the project,’’ the presenter said.
Council members asked whether the parking work would include crosswalks or other pedestrian safety elements. Staff said sidewalks and crosswalks are subject to right‑of‑way limitations and that design will specify any additional safety features; engineering and site reconfiguration between Johnson and 13th Street will be part of the project design process. The council approved a motion to accept the grant and authorize the city manager to execute the agreement and related documents.
Next steps: staff will proceed with engineering and bidding, include crosswalk and pedestrian safety considerations in design where feasible, and return to council with project documents if required for contract awards.
