Burien council completes advisory-board interviews; several appointments and one failed nomination

The Burien City Council conducted interviews and made appointments to several advisory boards on March 9, 2026.
For the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Advisory Board, councilmembers first moved to appoint Mike Adams; that nomination failed on a split vote. Council then appointed Erica Beattman to the seat with a recorded majority vote. During BEDP consideration the council voted to reopen recruitment for additional candidates, then subsequently appointed Roxana Pardo Garcia to a BEDP seat with a term through March 31, 2027.
The council also filled seats on the Human Services Commission after a round of interviews. Following nominations and a tally process, Cecilia Martinez Vasquez, Mike Hynish, and Patricia Hudson were appointed to four-year terms, while Kathy Jimenez and Sandy Restrepo were appointed to one-year terms. Council discussion emphasized balancing long-term experience and new voices, and one councilmember noted the importance of considering the whole spectrum of human-services needs (housing, behavioral health, food security, youth programs) when allocating limited funding.
Votes on appointments were recorded by roll call and produced a mix of unanimous and split outcomes; staff will follow up with start dates and term expirations.
