The Village of Orland Park board voted to decline installing a half basketball court at Eagle Ridge 3 Park after staff presented community engagement results showing majority opposition among nearby residents.
Trustee Catas moved to not add the half court and instead use budgeted funds for other athletic amenity improvements in 2026; the motion was seconded and approved on a roll call vote. Ray from the recreation department described the outreach: 35 responses came via yard signs, 68 from postcards, 74 from social media, and 12 in person — 189 responses in total. Among respondents living closest to the park, approximately 62% opposed adding the court.
Ray and trustees said the department prioritized input from those nearest the site and noted common park uses are walking, jogging, playground use, dog walking and passive recreation. Trustees also noted that Mission Hills Park nearby already has a half basketball court.
Trustees praised the department’s survey and engagement approach and emphasized that the decision reflects listening to neighbors. Officials said the board could revisit the issue in the future if needs change or demand increases.
