Closed session: President Owens read a multi-part motion to move into closed session at the start of the meeting to discuss student-disciplinary matters, potential litigation, personnel issues, property transactions and audits; the motion was seconded and approved by roll call, placing the board in closed session at 6:01 p.m.
Consent and finance votes: Administration read an extensive consent agenda (personnel, workers' compensation, minutes, bids and contracts). The board approved the consent agenda by motion and roll call with unanimous votes. Administration also recommended approval of an itemized list of bills read into the record; the board moved, seconded and approved the bills by unanimous roll call. The meeting approved a resolution naming Ray Haley Field at Royals Athletic Complex and adopted two finance resolutions authorizing transfers of interest earnings and transfers from operations-and-maintenance to the capital projects fund; each measure passed on roll-call votes with all members recorded as voting yes.
Public comment: Jonathan Medina urged transparency after a requested school video was deleted and asked the district to investigate; he said he believes forensic recovery is possible and said he is looking for accountability. Kenneth Nally, coach of the Elgin Sharks track club, said his nonprofit has rented U-46 facilities for more than 40 years and said he was denied school rentals this summer despite some schools indicating availability; he asked the district to clarify rental policies and consider grandfathering summer access for his program.
Operational updates: Dr. Johnson provided a boundary-transition update: the district reported more than 31,000 enrolled students for 2026–27, roughly 46% of K–12 families completed registration, and roughly 289 teacher vacancies remain (down from about 350). The district also reported moving schedules for 47 buildings (target completion June 18), distribution of nearly 25,000 moving boxes and assignment of 113 movers.
Next steps: Board members requested additional demographic, retention and IEP/504 data related to magnet and acceleration programs; administration pledged to provide those details in future updates. Several procurement and contract approvals were read and will return in implementation and contract documents as recommended.
