Watchung Hills board honors retiring teacher, county educators and student achievements

The Watchung Hills Regional High School Board of Education opened its June 2 meeting with a series of recognitions for staff and students, honoring retiring English teacher and coach Michael Porter and several county award recipients.
Dr. Jwitty, who led the presentations, read a proclamation for Michael Porter, noting his 21 years of service to the district, work with cross country and track programs, and county recognition as Somerset County Teacher of the Year. "He leads by example and Mike Porter never needs credit for his contributions," Dr. Jwitty said, adding the board "extends its heartfelt gratitude" for his service. The board read the resolution recognizing Porter's career and contributions.
The board also recognized Lauren Krueger as the district’s Educational Services Professional of the Year for her counseling work and student support, and presented a department award to the social studies faculty for local-history programming that earned a Somerset County Cultural and Heritage Commission prize. Individual staff honors included county and state teaching awards and athletics-related recognitions for coaches and support staff.
A student presenter, Neil Nquille, was recognized for placing first in the National Junior American Citizens poetry contest. "Thank you so much," Neil said briefly after receiving certificates and a medal.
Student representatives Sophie Lamb and Juliana Santos delivered a student report after the board returned from executive session. The report highlighted superior ratings at a May music festival for the Warrior Band, orchestra and choirs; STEM fair winners Kathleen Wang and Claire Woo; chemistry competition placings for Michael Jang and Winston Sue; and athletic successes, including a softball 8–0 win and Omar Mahal winning the Group 4 3,200-meter title in 9:16.
The recognitions segued into committee updates on testing, club approvals, facilities punch-list items, and transportation contracts. The board moved into executive session to address confidential personnel and legal matters and returned to hear the student report and committee summaries.
The meeting closed after routine business and a second public comment period, during which no members of the public spoke.
