Council approves minutes, funds $4,000 for Broad Street Cruise-In security and hears multiple public requests

Jeff Cross, representing the Broad Street Cruise-In, described efforts to maintain safety at the monthly downtown event by hiring three to four off-duty city officers; organizers said they have paid roughly $800 per event for officer coverage and asked the council for assistance to continue the level of security. "We have been paying $800 for those additional officers... we're here to seek any assistance that may be available," Cross said. Councilmember motioned to give $4,000 from riverboat funds; the motion was seconded and passed on a roll-call vote.
The council also heard a six-month update from Pastor Kevin Kiddwell of EK Ministries on outreach efforts and rising homelessness-related needs; Tony Young of Local 1722 and Cory Clemens, battalion chief with the New Castle Fire Department, asked the council to consider funding firefighter cancer screenings this August (estimated total roughly $11,000 for 32 members) and councilors discussed possible funding sources including non-reverted funds and riverboat balances.
Other items included a committee report about potholes in cemetery roads and a brief discussion of longer-term fiscal planning in light of Senate Bill 1, where council members urged exploring EMS/fire consolidation to reduce costs.
