Petoskey City Council on June 1 approved the purchase of a 60-unit, trailer-mounted vehicle barrier system to improve rapid-deployment protection at downtown events and for construction closures.
Public Works Director Jason Fate presented the recommended Advanced Security Technologies MVB3X modular vehicle barrier system citing ease of deployment, lightweight components, trailer storage and proven use by other municipalities. Fate said the trailer will carry 60 barriers and is designed for quick deployment at farmers markets, parades and construction closures.
Council Member Walker moved to authorize the purchase for $179,960; Mr. Wilmont seconded. The motion passed on a roll call recorded in the minutes (Walker, Wilmont, Moore, NAB, Murphy — all voting yes). The purchase was funded from the motor-pool fund with available balance after prior vehicle purchases, staff said.
Director Fate said the city will phase additional barrier purchases if needed to meet future event coverage needs and that the vendor has sold similar systems to other Michigan and U.S. municipalities.
