The Orting City Council on May 13 approved an amended public works director job description that refocuses the role toward maintenance, utilities and staff development rather than in-house project engineering. Bethune and HR staff said the new position description reduces the previously stated salary range (noted in the meeting as roughly $1.38'$1.55) down to a new range the meeting cited as about $1.26'$1.41. Council members debated whether the scope of duties matched the proposed pay band; Councilmember Reid and Councilmember Hogan voted no. The roll-call vote was recorded as: Perez — Yes; Williams — Yes; Tracy — Yes; Deputy Mayor Sproul — Yes; Holland — Yes; Hogan — No; Reid — No (motion passed 5'2).
Council requested HR provide the previous job description for comparison and asked staff to post the position and report back on recruitment approach. HR said the city will post the opening by the end of the week and assess whether to use a recruiter if needed.
