Bob Straitz, president of the South Haven Area Community Foundation, told the council the foundation has distributed about $1.6 million locally since incorporation and this year is awarding 21 grants totaling $125,233 alongside $39,600 in scholarships to 31 South Haven students.
Straitz read a long list of recipients and purposes, naming organizations that received support for emergency services drone upgrades; a spay-and-neuter program at the Elvan Humane Society; Foundry Hall for the Riverfront Concerts and Jazz Festival; the Liberty Hyde Bailey Museum’s 2026 Conference of Gardens and People; South Haven Center for the Arts and other local cultural and youth programs. He also described a youth advisory council endowment that trained young people to distribute grants and noted that the youth council itself had given $5,161 this year.
"The community foundation is about creating endowments and creating legacies," Straitz said, adding that representatives from the recipient organizations stood to be recognized.
Why it matters: The grants support a wide range of local services and cultural programming, from youth education and summer camps to public-safety equipment and arts programming. Councilmembers and attendees applauded the recipients.
What’s next: Recipients will use awarded funds for the listed purposes; the foundation will continue grantmaking and maintain the scholarship program.
