Sebring council authorizes staff to pursue $400,000 Volkswagen grant for Class 8 vehicle replacement

The Sebring City Council on June 2 authorized staff to pursue a Volkswagen settlement grant that would provide up to $400,000 toward replacing an eligible pre-2008 diesel Class 8 vehicle, a grant staff described as a one-time opportunity.
Jared Lee, budget and grants coordinator, told council the program mirrors a prior garbage-truck replacement award and that the only Class 8 vehicle the city has that qualifies is a fire engine built before 2008. "The cap is $400,000," Lee said, and added that the current cost of a fire engine is about $1.2 million, so the grant would cover only part of the replacement.
Lee explained the program requires the old engine to be made inoperable if the city accepts the grant: "It has to actually be destroyed... we'll actually have to cut frame rails in half and blow a hole through the engine." The fire chief described the city’s fleet condition and supported pursuing the grant, noting reserve engines are aging and costly to overhaul.
Councilmember motion and vote: A councilmember moved that the city proceed with development of the grant agreement and authorize the city administrator to sign the equipment proposal agreement; the motion was seconded and carried by voice vote.
What council will decide next: Staff will report back with details on capital improvement plan (CIP) impacts and whether to expand replacement plans. No contract award or purchase was recorded at the June 2 meeting; the motion authorized development of the agreement and signature authority for the equipment proposal only.
