The Old Saybrook Zoning Commission on June 1 reviewed and renewed annual permits for three gravel/stockpile operations and approved an application for up to eight outdoor seats for Swell at 188 Main Street.
Staff reported that two of the three gravel sites remain minimally active and that bonds are in place for active operations; the commission approved renewals and asked staff to examine whether a three-to-five-year renewal cycle could be reasonable for low-activity sites, with annual review reinstated upon ownership change or complaint. The commission noted typical materials now include millings, topsoil or reclaimed road material rather than large-scale excavation.
Separately, the commission approved the Swell outdoor seating request (two tables, up to eight seats) on the condition the tables do not obstruct pedestrian travel on the sidewalk.
Staff said a special meeting is scheduled for June 22 to hear time-sensitive items and reminded members of upcoming agendas.
