Committee recommends five volunteers for Proposition 1 for/against committees

City attorney's office staff asked the committee to review five letters of interest received for volunteer appointments to the Proposition 1 for/against committees for the Aug. 4 ballot. The office said they received three letters for the "for" committee and two for the "against" committee and that state law requires local jurisdictions to appoint committee members and limits a committee to three members.
Chair moved to recommend the appointments of Michael Cassie, Nathaniel Laver and Lawrence Soderick to the Proposition 1 "for" committee; the motion was seconded and adopted by voice vote. The chair then moved to recommend appointments of Steven Cook and Ben Lacking to the "against" committee; that motion was seconded and adopted by voice vote. Committee members discussed residency expectations under state law and agreed the applicants appeared to meet local-residency preferences.
Next step: staff will forward the committee's recommendations to the full council for formal appointment; Deborah from the city attorney's office reminded the committee that the county may appoint members if local jurisdictions fail to act before the deadline.
