La Conner’s town council approved revisions to the Arts Commission’s youth-advisory ordinance and immediately appointed a high-school student to fill the newly clarified youth seat. Council member Dole moved to approve the ordinance update and the motion passed by voice vote.
The ordinance revision adds detail to section 2(a) about youth appointee requirements, staff told the council. Scott, speaking for staff, said the revisions correct prior language and accommodate students who rotate through advisory roles. “We made a couple of additional revisions,” Scott said, noting spelling corrections and changes to the youth-appointee paragraph.
Under the revised rules the mayor’s office and the arts commission interviewed applicants; the council approved a resolution appointing “Mr. Phillips,” identified in the meeting record as a senior at Mount Vernon High School, to the arts commission. Scott said Phillips is excited about the role and that two other students will serve on an advisory committee rather than as full appointees.
The motion to adopt the ordinance and the appointment were made and seconded on the record; both measures carried on voice votes. The council did not record individual vote tallies in the meeting minutes presented tonight.
The action finalizes a change staff said is intended to clarify how student members are selected and how shorter-term student advisers will be handled going forward. The council did not set an implementation date beyond approving the ordinance language and the appointment during tonight’s session.
