Planning commission approves historic‑design review for deck replacement at 602 South 4th Street

The La Conner Planning Commission on Jan. 6 approved historic‑design review application LU25‑66HDR, allowing a deck replacement and a secondary roof element at 602 South 4th Street.

Planning staff summarized the proposal as a renovation of an existing deck that would use composite decking designed to replicate wood, a simple brown aluminum handrail, glass wind panels and a composite secondary rooflet with clear polycarbonate and wood connections to match the existing trim. Staff told commissioners the project “is not a full roof and therefore should not be subjected to the slope requirements,” and recommended approval.

Commissioners asked clarifying questions about the composite material and the construction details; staff replied that the composite decking is permitted because it replicates wood. The applicant was not present for the hearing.

Chair moved to approve the application; the motion was seconded and the commission voted in favor by voice vote. The commission’s recommendation will allow the applicant to proceed with permit review and building‑permit submittals consistent with the approved elevations and materials.

Planning staff said they could present the approved plans back to the commission or the town as needed if permit submittals require further review. The commission did not add conditions beyond the materials and design presented at the hearing.
