Board reports very low wastewater indicators and seasonal respiratory decline

In a brief public‑health update at the May 27 meeting, Board Chair Matt Wiesen reported that recent wastewater surveillance readings are very low, with "non‑detectable" values in the southern sampling source and only double‑digit values in another source — levels the chair said he had not seen in about five years. He described this as a favorable sign for reduced community transmission of monitored pathogens.
Francis Daigle told the board influenza and RSV indicators are at very low levels heading into the summer; municipal arbovirus mosquito testing will begin in June and the health department will provide updates as samples come in. Chair Wiesen said the low wastewater baseline may make future increases more notable and easier to interpret.
The board noted that routine surveillance and public messaging (vaccination reminders, mosquito protection) remain part of the department's work plan for the season.
