Nathan Levenson, president of New Solutions K-12, presented the firm’s project goals and research plan to the Branford Board of Education on May 27 and summarized key commendations and opportunities for the district.
Levenson listed six opportunities the consultant team identified: clarify general-education and special-education teaching best practices; couple core instruction with extra time for learning to support mastery; target intervention with directed instruction (pre-teach and re-teach) focused on foundational skills; specialize special-education teacher roles (content, behavior support, case management, pedagogical coaching); increase the reach and impact of staff through appropriately sized small groups; and redesign the ATLAS alternative program to serve distinct student needs (externalizers, internalizers, those with academic challenges).
Levenson emphasized tailoring intervention strategies to student needs and creating a districtwide theory of action for addressing challenging behavior. The presentation also outlined the project’s qualitative evidence, data analysis and recommended next steps for implementation and program redesign.
Next steps: The feasibility study process is ongoing and district leadership will consider the consultant recommendations as part of facilities and program planning.
