Westside reports NSCAS scores above state averages, outlines targeted supports

Westside Community Schools reported Jan. 13 that district NSCAS results for 2023–24 were above state averages in ELA, math and science; the district plans math professional learning for 2025–26 and three full-time facilitators for high-need schools funded by a Learning Community grant.
Dr. Mark Weichel, Westside Community Schools’ assistant superintendent for teaching and learning, briefed the board Jan. 13 on the district’s 2023–24 NSCAS outcomes and related strategic-plan progress. Westside scored above the state in English language arts (about 8–12 points higher across tested grades), math (about 0–14 points higher) and science in the grades tested, according to the presentation filed with the board.
Dr. Weichel reported that students who have been enrolled in the district three years or longer and students with higher attendance rates tend to score higher. He said the Nebraska Department of Education made only slight changes to the NSCAS process this year, which should improve year-to-year comparisons.
As next steps the district plans focused math professional learning for the 2025–26 school year and will add three full-time Facilitators through a Learning Community grant. District officials said those facilitators will concentrate supports at the district’s highest-need schools — Hillside, Westbrook and Westgate — with the objectives of boosting teacher capacity and delivering targeted classroom supports.
