The Westside Community Schools Board of Education on Feb. 3 approved contracts tied to the district’s Phase II bond program and a major upgrade to the Westside High School auditorium while also adopting routine policy and personnel items.
Matt Herzog of Project Advocates asked the board to accept Jamco Abatement Services, Inc.’s low bid of $59,840 to remove asbestos-containing materials at Westbrook Elementary. The board approved the abatement work, which is scheduled for summer when the building will be unoccupied.
Andy Wane, the district’s director of facilities, sought approval for a Downs Electric contract totaling $619,554 to replace stage rigging and lighting in the Westside High School auditorium. Wane said the project scope exceeded the original $500,000 budget after staff identified additional needs, including replacement of the fire curtain, customization of rigging for angled stage walls and repair of smoke vents above the stage. The board approved the contract by unanimous roll call vote.
The board also approved two policy updates previously discussed on Jan. 13: Policy #5470 (School-Sponsored Publications, Productions and Activities) and Policy #5680 (Student Insurance). In-house legal counsel Nick Lesiak presented the minor language revisions before the board voted to adopt both policies.
Assistant Superintendent Andrea Haynes presented the personnel report, which included one probationary certified contract and four certified resignations; the board approved the personnel actions.
