Southeastern Housing Foundation expands blight program scope; parks and community events planned

Beth Overton of the Southeastern Housing Foundation updated Barnwell City Council on the Blight Program and requested an amendment to allow the program to work with small commercial development, increasing assistance for commercial buildings to $8,000. Overton said local contractors would be used and that an updated list of condemned properties will be provided. Council took the item as information.
Overton also highlighted the Foundation’s April 18 annual Ramp Day, a volunteer effort to build ramps (25 ramps planned). A celebration dinner for volunteers will be held April 17 at Rosemary Baptist Church in Williston. Council did not take formal action on the contract amendment at this meeting.
Councilmember Alicia Davis provided Parks, Recreation and Tourism updates: the 11–12 boys basketball team won a recent tournament in Williston; a Hoop by a Dream tournament is scheduled March 28–29; baseball season begins this week despite a uniform issue; Carnival of Love and an April 11 Easter egg hunt at Lemon Park are planned. Administrator Tony Dicks reported Fuller Park grant work is progressing, Webb Surveying completed the site survey, and staff expect an RFQ for site work for a proposed food-truck court.
These items were taken as information; no votes were recorded on the blight contract amendment or park programming during the March 2 meeting.
