Commissioners approve seasonal road hire amid wider staffing and recordkeeping debate

The county’s road superintendent reported recent storm cleanup, equipment issues and the need for additional personnel. Commissioners and staff debated two competing priorities: hiring a new administrative assistant to handle permits, FEMA paperwork and inventory tracking, or adding a blade operator to reduce route miles and operational strain.

Several commissioners and staff argued that better documentation—especially for FEMA reimbursement and gravel inventories—would likely pay dividends and that an office person could help capture reimbursable costs. Others said operational capacity in the field is already thin and that adding a blade operator would immediately reduce mileage per operator and improve service to rural routes.

The commission voted to hire Ron Dykma as a seasonal road department employee after a motion and second. Commissioners agreed to continue refining a vision for the road department’s staffing levels and asked the superintendent and county staff to return with job descriptions, grade/step comparisons and budget impacts before any further hires.

The meeting also covered the county’s use of an Armor Interactive tracking program (used previously by the road department) and the need to assign someone with access to that software to support FEMA filings. Commissioners asked staff to work with the county auditor and IT to ensure that data used for reimbursements is captured in the format FEMA requires.

Outcome: motion to hire Ron Dykma as a seasonal road department employee was approved by voice vote. County staff were directed to draft job descriptions and budget scenarios for future consideration.
