Security assessment recommends cameras; sheriff’s office will host body‑camera storage

Alan Harden, a retired sheriff’s deputy working with APAC Security, presented a security assessment to the Rutherford County DSS board and recommended small, low-cost fixes plus broader policy changes and cameras to improve safety at the DSS office.
Harden said many corrective items are straightforward — mirrors in breezeways, no‑weapon signage and clearer loitering rules — and that the relocation of probation offices will reduce congestion. "I was stunned when I started working at the county for all these years and cameras I mean, everywhere you go, you're on camera. And except for the Hope House, there's not a camera in DSS," Harden told the board, saying the assessment identified about 15 items that can be completed.
Harden also said the sheriff's office agreed to let security staff use departmental radios and to host storage of body-camera footage through the sheriff’s Axon server. He said DSS has two body cameras and an iPad and that the sheriff's office process will govern access and retention of the footage. Harden cautioned that policies about who can view footage and the records‑request process will need to align with sheriff’s office procedures.
Board members welcomed the partnership and asked for a written assessment. Harden said the full security assessment will be presented next month with proposed corrections and a timeline for implementation. No funding decisions were made at the meeting.
