Commissioners approve senior services allocation and new jail food‑service contract

The Randolph County Board approved two budget‑and‑contract items on June 1: the fiscal‑year Home and Community Care Block Grant allocation recommended by the Aging Services Planning Committee and a new inmate food services contract for the county jail.

Senior services funding: Floyd Johnson, executive director of the Randolph Senior Adults Association and chair of the county’s Aging Services Planning Committee, presented the HCCBG recommendation for FY 2026–27. The committee recommended a total allocation of $986,605 (an increase of approximately $160 from the prior year), with $677,873 for the Randolph Senior Adults Association to provide Category 1 services and $308,732 to regional consolidated services. The board approved the allocation and authorized the chairman to sign subsequent changes.

Jail food services contract: Ricky presented a proposal to replace the current jail food vendor with Killwell Food Management, citing daily inmate complaints about food quality and portion size, a recent health‑inspector review, and expected savings. The Killwell proposal would increase total daily calories served per inmate from 2,400 to 2,700 and, under the contract comparisons presented, would save the county an estimated $143,522 at a 340‑inmate baseline and larger projected savings at higher population levels. The board voted to award the contract and authorized the county manager to sign the associated agreement.
