Marshall County Board authorizes deputy hiring and approves sale of retiring officer’s revolver

Marshall County’s Board of Commissioners on May 19 authorized multiple personnel and equipment actions affecting the county sheriff’s office and jail.
Sheriff Jason Boman and Jail Administrator Mark Ellerbusch updated the Board on jail operations and staffing. The Board approved a motion allowing a retiring officer to purchase their service revolver after the Sheriff sets a fair price (moved by Commissioner Duckstad, seconded by Commissioner Nybladh; vote 5-0). The Board also authorized advertising for a deputy position at C‑51 that includes hazard pay, on-call pay and shift differential (moved by Commissioner Kiesow, seconded by Commissioner Bring; vote 5-0).
Boman reported that Deputies Hayden Sczepanski and Willie Wagner have completed field officer training and will expand that training program to all deputies. Board members discussed timelines and plans to replace retiring staff; no hiring decisions beyond the authorization to advertise were finalized at the meeting. Jail Administrator Ellerbusch told the Board the jail is open and operating well.
The actions are procedural authorizations: the sale of the firearm requires Sheriff approval of price, and the hiring authorization directs staff to begin recruitment rather than fill the position immediately. Any final hires or veteran‑equipment transfers will follow standard departmental approvals and applicable policies.
