Dennis Beach Committee recommends multiple volunteer cleanups and seasonal events to Selectboard

The Dennis Beach Committee on March 29 recommended the Selectboard approve three community events and volunteer cleanups, including a Dennis-Yarmouth Newcomers Club cleanup slated for mid-May, a Lions Club spring cleanup at Mayflower Beach and the annual Blessing of the Bikes in early May.
Mary Ann Carmichael, speaking for the Dennis-Yarmouth Newcomers Club, told the committee the group would "bring our own bags, our own gloves" and could haul away the trash themselves if necessary. She said the club expected about 50 volunteers and planned a 90-minute cleanup followed by informal lunches. The committee discussed logistics and DPW pickup, and Chair recommended forwarding the group’s application to the Selectboard so the town can complete insurance and event paperwork.
For the Blessing of the Bikes, committee members emphasized traffic control. A committee member who moved the recommendation said the approval should be "based upon having traffic control of Fisk" and added that police coverage on School Street, Fisk and Lighthouse Road should be required to avoid repeat problems experienced in past years. The committee voted to recommend the event to the Selectboard with those stipulations and a prohibition on sales on the beach or in the parking lot without separate permission.
A Lions Club representative requested an April 19 cleanup at Mayflower Beach during the Lions’ week of service. Staff told the committee the group must provide a contact name, expected headcount and a certificate of insurance so DPW can coordinate pickup. The committee moved to recommend the Lions’ request to the Selectboard pending submission of those materials.
Chair closed each event discussion by noting that the recommendations would go to the Selectboard for final sign-off and that staff would circulate the requisite application forms. The committee’s recommendations were advisory; the Selectboard will carry out final permitting and insurance checks.
The committee also reviewed routine operational considerations — including timing so DPW can collect bags on Monday after weekend cleanups and advising organizers to keep trash away from food items — and urged organizers to coordinate directly with staff for final details.
