The Soddy‑Daisy Board of Commissioners on Feb. 19 discussed several items related to parks, community events and code enforcement as the city prepares for the spring recreation season and upcoming events.
Vice‑Mayor Jackie Penney said the city has received six Events Committee applications and asked commissioners to recommend two to four candidates each; he nominated Fire Chief Dusty Morgan (or his designee) to serve on the committee for safety oversight. City Manager Johnson said applications will be reviewed before appointments and that committee members may live outside city limits because it is a community committee.
Commissioner Beene relayed a citizen complaint about 4‑wheeling at Igou Ferry Road and Vine Street. Public Works Director Grant suggested placing large concrete chunks with mulch to deter riders but noted it would be unattractive; Police Chief Petty said officers may have apprehended one person but that property ownership is uncertain and may be state land. City Manager Johnson asked officers to increase patrols in the area.
Commissioner Keith reported 370 codes cases with 169 closed. Mayor Coleman said the Planning Commission approved site plans for two new businesses, Waffle House and Access Pharmacy. City Manager Johnson said the City Attorney provided a remedy allowing the city to place liens on properties of owners who do not pay fines or clean up properties; staff are implementing that process.
Parks and Recreation Director Chad Crowe said ball practice begins in March, the Kids Club starts in two weeks, and the department purchased eight tons of field conditioner. Crowe said lights for Field 6 would cost about $150,000 and suggested pursuing grants; City Manager Johnson said some grants are offered on a 50/50 basis and are available every two years. Police Chief Petty said staff expect more than 600 youth to register this season. Commissioners discussed upgrading fences, fields and lighting in a coordinated project and noted parking challenges on game days.
No formal votes were taken on these items at the meeting; the discussions focused on planning, enforcement tools and preparing for the upcoming recreation season.
