West Milford committee outlines America25250 plans; discusses possible Memorial Day Parade change

Council Liaison Michael Chazukow told the West Milford Heritage Committee that a town resolution endorsing West Milford27s participation in America25250 (the nation27s semiquincentennial) had been adopted the previous month and that he had attended League of Municipalities sessions with materials and contacts he plans to synthesize for the committee in January. Chazukow referenced resources and event ideas including period-appropriate bands and readings, and provided the League27s website, revnj.org, as a source for further planning.
The committee briefly discussed local event planning and community partners who could participate in semiquincentennial activities. Chazukow said he would try to compile his notes into a digestible plan and report back in January.
Separately, Michael Van Hooker reported that the Friends of Wallisch expressed interest in having next year27s Memorial Day Parade end at the Wallisch property, reviving a past format where floats lined the street and a community event was held at the site. Van Hooker said discussions with American Legion representatives suggested they were not eager to change the traditional terminus from the Legion property. Chazukow said he would raise the proposal with the mayor and town council to determine whether the town would pursue a change for next year.
The committee reviewed correspondence including AASLH (American Association for State and Local History) newsletters, leadership awards information and a source for Warwick Revolutionary maps. The meeting adjourned at 8:00 p.m.; the committee will meet again Jan. 13, 2026.
