Lamar aldermen extend orders on multiple properties and declare 1503 College a public nuisance

The Board of Aldermen on Jan. 20 extended enforcement orders for two properties and declared a third a public nuisance, taking unanimous votes on each item presented by Building Inspector Jim Buzzard.
Buzzard presented photos showing cleanup at 1404–1410 Lexington (owner: Roger Mayfield); Mayfield told the council a sale is pending and the plan is to rehabilitate and rent the property. Alderman Nate Eddie moved to extend the existing order to the May 18, 2026 meeting to give the new owner time to comply; Alderman Mike Main seconded and the motion passed unanimously. Police Chief Shannon Crouch said there have been no further abatement issues at that location since an eviction was resolved.
On 807 Poplar (owner: Martin Hohulin), Buzzard reported the garage had been demolished but deterioration remains above the porch and the home is inhabited. Alderman Brian Griffith moved to extend the order to the March 16, 2026 meeting; Alderman Judd Chesnut seconded. The council approved the extension unanimously.
After Buzzard’s presentation on 1503 College (owner: Mike Sims), Alderman Colton Higgins moved to declare the property a public nuisance detrimental to the health, safety and welfare of city residents; Alderman Nate Eddie seconded and the motion passed unanimously. Alderman Curt Roland then moved that an order be issued to repair or demolish and remove the house structure; Alderman Harold VanDeMark seconded and the council approved that order unanimously.
Buzzard also noted in his report that six 'New Seasons' properties need review and that demolition of the old O’Sullivan building is complete. The minutes record motions, seconds and unanimous votes for each enforcement action but do not list specific remediation deadlines beyond the extension dates noted above.
