Chelmsford ATEF considers fall micro-grants for clubs and notes two committee openings

The Arts & Technology Education Fund Committee on May 6 discussed adding a fall cycle of small grants aimed at student clubs and announced two committee openings following recent departures.
Evelyn Thoren proposed a fall round of smaller awards (suggested $250–$300) to fund current-year club needs while preserving the larger spring grant cycle for larger projects. Carrie Meikle suggested the fall round focus on student clubs specifically. Jay Lang cautioned against funding items that would be covered by formal school budget requests, noting the district asks teachers about budget needs in the fall.
Kirk Marshall supported a clubs-only fall cycle with a $250 maximum. Committee members agreed that principals would need to sign off on club applications and that club advisors must submit applications (students may assist with writing). Linda Hirsch warned the committee to disqualify potentially dangerous requests such as requests involving hazardous chemicals.
Izzy Hastie will revise the application and cover letter to reflect club-focused fall grants and will present those changes for approval at the next meeting. The committee also noted it needs volunteers to support administrative tasks such as writing donation thank-you notes and that someone has contacted Evelyn Thoren about joining the committee.
The committee will present the current spring awards at the Town Select Meeting on June 1 at 6:00 p.m. and agreed to meet immediately afterward to continue business.
