The Arts & Technology Education Fund Committee approved five grant applications totaling $4,400 at its May 6 meeting, the committee chair said. The awards will fund classroom technology and literacy initiatives across Chelmsford public schools.
The committee recorded an account balance of $48,859.46, with much of the fund held in high-yield certificates of deposit, and agreed there were sufficient funds to cover the requests. Izzy Hastie reported the balance and moved to accept the financial report; the motion passed.
Approved grants include: - $1,000 to Stephanie Santos (Center School) for mini audio centers to support classroom audio learning; the committee discussed whether the technology department would be needed for equipment setup and concluded teachers could provide clarification if needed. - $800 to Catharina Berglund (Center School) to update the library’s STEM book collection with a detailed list of titles submitted in the application. - $800 to Mary Ellen Forty (CHIPS) for “Connecting Home and School with Reading” monthly book kits; the committee noted Forty’s prior history of successful ATEF grants. - $1,000 to Meghan Fitzgibbons (Chelmsford High School) for green screens to support the ASL program. - $799 to Michael Sullivan (PE teacher, Parker Middle School) for an iPad, tripod and fitness app; committee members asked whether parental consent for filming would be required and were told existing parent/guardian consent forms should suffice.
Carrie Meikle moved to fund all five grants in full; Kirk Marshall seconded and the committee approved the motion. The committee also approved a separate motion to transfer $4,400 from the ATEF town account to the appropriate school account line item for disbursement; Evelyn Thoren will notify the town business office of the transfer.
The committee scheduled public presentation of the awards at the Town Select Meeting on June 1 at 6:00 p.m., with ATEF set to meet immediately afterward. The meeting adjourned at 6:39 p.m.
