Council adopts zoning change to allow state veterans cemetery

Washington Terrace council voted unanimously Tuesday to rezone a parcel to open-space (O-1) to make way for a state-sponsored veterans cemetery.
Tyler (building official) explained the planning commission forwarded the request after staff meetings with the cemetery representatives and noted the parcel had previously been zoned R-1-10 in error. "The open space zone is what our parks are," Tyler said, adding the site is on sensitive lands and state and federal agencies have completed geotechnical work and will manage the project.
Tyler also reported the state facilities division (DFCM) expects to award construction contracts around Sept. 30 and, weather permitting, work could begin in November. The council approved Ordinance 26-01 on a roll-call vote, with members expressing support for turning the site into a veterans cemetery and noting coordination on infrastructure needs (water, sewer, fire access) will continue.
Next steps: staff will continue reviewing infrastructure plans with state project managers and provide updates as design and contract dates firm up.
