Council recognizes veterans leaders, Penn Center milestone and launches first-responder food drive outreach

Beaufort County Council honored veterans and community organizations during its Oct. 28 meeting and heard about several local initiatives.
County Administrator introduced Virginia Marshall, who described the Beaufort County first-responder food drive running Nov. 1–Dec. 13 to collect nonperishable goods at 21 locations for distribution to two local agencies that together serve more than 500 families per month. "We will distribute it the following week to the two agencies so that they can assist with keeping their food banks and food shelves stocked through the New Year," Marshall said.
Council members presented a proclamation recognizing Red Ribbon Week and thanked Young Marines for their work on drug-prevention education. Councilmember David Bartholomew presented an Operation Greenlight proclamation designating November to honor veterans and encourage residents to display green lights for transitioning service members.
The council also recognized Penn Center on its 162nd anniversary; a Penn Center representative noted UNESCO’s recent designation of the Penn Center as one of 22 global sites of remembrance related to enslavement and the slave trade. County leaders congratulated staff and volunteers on awards from the South Carolina Association of Counties and the regional cooperation award for the coroner's office.
The county announced a new veterans service office in Bluffton had its grand opening the prior Friday. The administrators asked council members to help publicize the food drive and related events on social media and through local networks.
No formal council votes were required for the proclamations and recognitions.
