Shelburne equity committee recommends Selectboard lead on resolution condemning attacks on due process

The Town of Shelburne Equity & Diversity Committee on Jan. 26 recommended that the Selectboard take the lead in developing and adopting a resolution condemning attacks on due process and constitutional rights across the United States. The committee said it is available to support the Selectboard’s drafting work as needed.
Sarah McIlvennie, facilitator for the meeting, reported that the committee reviewed a request from the Selectboard asking Shelburne to consider such a resolution and that the committee drafted a response recommending the Selectboard lead the development and adoption process. The committee shared that response with Selectboard Chair Mike Ashooh on Monday, Jan. 27.
Committee members discussed the fact that at least 22 other Vermont municipalities have adopted similar resolutions and concluded the Selectboard was the appropriate body to develop language that would represent the people of Shelburne. The committee then split into two project-specific subgroups to advance work; those subgroups did not meet quorum, so no subgroup notes were produced.
The committee also handled routine business: Patricia Fontaine moved to approve the Jan. 26 agenda and later moved to approve the minutes from the Jan. 12 meeting; both motions were seconded by Dave McLean and were approved by the committee. At the close of the meeting, Josh Flore moved to adjourn; Dave McLean seconded and the motion carried. The meeting adjourned at 7:05 p.m.
Members recorded action items to support next steps. Sarah McIlvennie was assigned to email town leadership to request time on an upcoming Selectboard agenda to present a Civic Engagement Principles resource (task due 1/27/26). The Governance subgroup will review the town website and CivicPlus resources before Feb. 9, and all committee members will review the committee’s feedback form ahead of the February discussion (both tasks due 2/9/26).
The committee noted a community event on the calendar: a Multicultural Movie screening of Lilo & Stitch at 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 13 at the Pierson Library. No members of the public spoke during the meeting’s public comment period.
The Equity & Diversity Committee will reconvene with Sarah McIlvennie as facilitator; the next minutes taker was to be decided.
