Mendota council directs staff to pursue state parks grant and sets 2025 advocacy priorities

Members of Townsend Public Affairs provided a grant funding update and recommended potential funding sources for park, road and social-service projects. Alex Gibbs briefed the council on several opportunities, including the California Department of Parks and Recreation Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF).
After the presentation and public comment, Mayor Pro Tem Jose Alonso moved and Council Member Jesus Mendoza seconded a motion directing staff to proceed with applying for LWCF grant funding to support a proposed park at the William Robert Johnston Municipal Airport. The motion passed with a recorded 3 ayes (Mayor Pro Tem Alonso, Council Member Mendoza and Mayor Martinez) and Council Member Libertad Lopez absent at the time, with Council Member Joseph R. Riofrio also absent.
Separately, Townsend consultant Spencer Street presented the city’s proposed priorities for upcoming state and federal advocacy meetings. The council unanimously directed staff to prioritize parks and recreation projects, public safety, special-needs services, homelessness, and infrastructure during 2025 advocacy efforts.
Josh Garcia urged the council to consider additional recreation opportunities, including a sports complex and expanded soccer fields; council discussion referenced the Eddie Porras Basketball Courts being used for soccer due to a lack of fields. Council did not take a final action on a sports complex at this meeting.
