Board authorizes advertisement of revised taser policy and approves 2026 police interceptor purchase

The West Deer Board on Feb. 18 authorized advertisement of Ordinance No. 463, which updates the Township’s police policies on energy weapons by removing a model‑specific reference and allowing the Chief of Police and administration to implement and enforce the updated procedures.
Chief Robert Loper explained the change is needed to avoid referencing a specific taser model number. The motion to authorize advertisement was made by Supervisor Jeffrey Fleming, seconded by Supervisor William Payne, and passed 5‑0.
Separately, Chief Loper requested Board authorization to purchase a 2026 Ford Police Interceptor and an upfit package under the PA COSTARS contract. The quotes were Tom Masano Ford for the vehicle ($46,900) and Team Force for the upfit ($18,724.30), for a combined total of $65,624.30. The Chief said the purchase was part of normal vehicle rotation and recommended offering the outgoing unit for public bid rather than transferring it to volunteer fire or EMS due to repair costs. Motion by Supervisor Joshua Wiegand, seconded by Supervisor William Payne, to authorize the purchase carried 5‑0.
Both items will proceed to the administrative steps required for procurement and ordinance advertisement.
