Chelsey Hoffman, Village Clerk/Treasurer for Readstown, told the Vernon County Economic Development Committee on April 2, 2026, that available housing in the village is limited because the community is landlocked by floodplain and several owners of vacant parcels are unwilling to sell.
Hoffman said a former school building has potential for housing development, and she described local efforts to adjust levy limits to address debt. She credited new businesses and park improvements — including a Dollar General, upgrades to a baseball field and disc golf — with drawing visitors to the village. Hoffman also described a stream restoration along part of the Kickapoo River that has improved the village’s appeal and said Readstown is exploring a river walk and campsites as potential attractions.
The village is also exploring funding for a new fire and EMS facility, she said, noting the current facility is aging. Hoffman’s briefing emphasized constraints on buildable land and local interest in leveraging recreational assets and building infrastructure to support residents and visitors.
The committee recorded the report as part of regular business; no formal action was taken on Readstown items at the April meeting.
