At the Town Board meeting on Dec. 8, Lt. Adam Zellberger reported year‑to‑date public safety metrics for the Newburgh Police Department: "year to date the Police Dept. has handled just under 25,000 calls for service," he said, adding the department has made 1,590 arrests — an increase of more than 1,000 compared with the same point last year. The department also reported issuing 2,564 traffic tickets and 812 parking tickets.
Zellberger said the department conducted interviews that day for three full‑time police officer openings and three full‑time dispatcher openings and that background investigations have started for several candidates. The board did not take separate action on the recruitment items during the meeting beyond noting the status update.
Why it matters: The reported increase in arrests and sustained call volume reflect operational pressures on the department and provide context for ongoing hiring and resource decisions. The department’s personnel moves — interviews and background checks for multiple openings — indicate staffing is an active priority for the coming months.
What’s next: Hiring and background investigations for selected candidates will continue; the department will present any formal hiring requests to the board as required.
