Council hears fire station grand opening date and ambulance remount savings

Council member William Bicknell told Carlisle City Council on July 23 that the new fire station will hold a grand opening at 1 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 2 and invited the public and council to attend.
Bicknell described recent work to remount two ambulances and a staff vehicle on new chassis, saying the effort cost "just over $300,000" and compared that to a cited price of about $350,000 for a brand-new ambulance with a 36-month back order. "Us remounting them on brand new chassis allowed them to be used with minimal updates for technology and another ten years," he said, and added the approach pushes the need to replace the oldest ambulance to roughly 2030.
He also said the city will apply a new red, gray and black paint scheme to the remounted units so the fleet matches the new station and that project closeout will leave about $350,000 remaining from the original station budget after final payments to the architect and contractor. Bicknell credited operations and leadership at the fire department and staff—naming Captain Whitney, Chiefs Madden and Lane, and Scot Fromeyer—for work that kept costs down.
Mayor Randy Winkler and other council members congratulated the fire department on the new building, which Bicknell said will place modern equipment "in the heart of our town" to shorten response times.
The city did not provide detailed line-item accounting in the meeting; figures were presented by council as estimates. Staff indicated community members are welcome at the Aug. 2 grand opening.
