At its March 12 meeting the Open Space and Recreation Committee discussed tennis and pickleball operations, including reservation procedures, maintenance and potential fee adjustments. Cheryl Doble and James Burrows said they plan to test CourtReserve and create a tutorial for users; they requested DPW assistance to set up access without charging fees during testing.
James Burrows reported guidance from Jonathan Klarin, who previously maintained the original clay courts at Church Street: clay courts should be rolled daily for two weeks before opening and raked with a steel‑bristle brush to prevent moss buildup. Burrows also noted an earlier offer from David McNamara and the West Chop Club to contribute maintenance services rather than funds; Burrows agreed to follow up. Gerard Hokanson suggested the committee evaluate increasing fees to cover maintenance costs; Burrows said he will compare revenue to maintenance spending.
Carolyn Wallis asked about installing a remote gate lock for the Lake Street pickleball courts. Kirk Metell said a Wi‑Fi connection is required before a remote lock can be installed and linked to CourtReserve; weather had delayed Wi‑Fi installation. DPW discussed options to refresh courts midseason if in‑house maintenance proves insufficient.
No formal motions were taken on fees or contracts at the March 12 meeting; the committee directed staff and members to follow up on testing, maintenance offers and fee assessments.
