Marion council authorizes demolition of long‑vacant hazardous structure at 436 State Street

The Marion City Council voted unanimously on May 19 to authorize demolition of an uninhabitable structure at 436 State Street after staff described an extended enforcement and hearing history that began in 2020.
Interim Planning and Development Director Vance McNees told council the case included site inspections, notice and a sequence of administrative hearings. McNees said an order issued at a November 2025 hearing gave the property owner 10 days to obtain permits and 90 days to fully restore, demolish, move, or rehabilitate the structure, with that statutory deadline falling on Feb. 25, 2026. According to staff, the owner did not act within the timeframe permitted by law, and North Carolina General Statutes now authorize the City of Marion to proceed with demolition.
Mr. Ayers and Mr. McNees explained the next steps: staff will solicit bids, recommend awarding the contract to the lowest responsible bidder, and record the cost of demolition as a lien against the property. The council’s motion to proceed was made by Mayor Pro Tem Ann Harkey and seconded by Council Member Billy Martin; the motion carried unanimously.
The council’s authorization begins a procurement and demolition process; costs and a contractor were not specified at the May 19 meeting.
