Interlaken flags wildfire as top hazard, schedules land-use public hearing for June 17

Mayor Greg Harrigan and Town Administrator Bart Smith reported on a MAG pre-disaster mitigation meeting held April 28 that reviewed a range of hazards. They said wildfire is Interlaken’s most relevant potential disaster and that the county has a draft Community Wildfire Preparedness Plan (CWPP) that Interlaken can use as a starting point. The council noted that a Disaster Mitigation Plan is required for FEMA grant eligibility.
Bart Smith outlined upcoming land-use code revisions and announced a public hearing on June 17, 2026. Draft items include Title 09 (Building Permit Staff Roles), Title 09 (adoption of a WUI code previously approved) and Title 11 (Outdoor Lighting). The council will use the hearing to collect public input on the proposed code changes.
Why it matters Wildfire planning, code revisions and mitigation grants can influence land-use rules, building requirements and grant-funded projects in Interlaken. Residents and property owners will have an opportunity to comment at the June 17 public hearing.
