The Mahwah Township Council introduced an ordinance on Jan. 22 that would prohibit U‑turns on Martis Place and Reid Court after residents cited traffic safety worries during the public comment period.
Ordinance No. 2080 — titled to amend Chapter 7 (Traffic) of the Township Code to prohibit U‑turns on Martis Place and Reid Court — was introduced by Councilmember Ervin and seconded by Councilmember Paz and passed on first reading with a unanimous roll call vote. The Council set a public hearing for Feb. 5, 2026 at 7:00 p.m.; if adopted after the hearing the ordinance will take effect 20 days later.
During public comment, resident Donna Davino described her concern about safety in her neighborhood and asked whether the "No U‑turns" provision would be added; fellow resident Jerry Brody agreed. Council President Robert M. Ferguson explained the introduction procedure for the ordinance and indicated he would review related existing traffic ordinances to ensure consistency.
Why it matters: the change is narrowly focused on two local streets where residents say particular driving maneuvers create safety hazards. The ordinance will be finalized only after the public hearing and a subsequent Council vote.
Next steps: the Council will hold the public hearing on Feb. 5, 2026 and take a final vote; the clerk will publish required notices of introduction and final passage.
