The Alachua County Board of County Commissioners voted unanimously on June 2 to approve a permit allowing two water buffalo and performing horses to appear in a scheduled Wild West event at the Alachua County Agricultural and Equestrian Center.
Dr. Cori Cheval, executive director of the Gainesville Circus Center, told the board the production’s animal handlers provide veterinarian oversight, that the water buffalo will have limited performance time (a roughly three‑minute main act with long breaks and a total onsite schedule of around four hours), and that livestock housing and pasture arrangements meet animal‑welfare expectations. Cheval said the project also received recognition from the National Endowment for the Arts.
Facility staff raised safety questions about the arena rail and containment; Allen Evans, an office manager at the Agricultural and Equestrian Center, said the existing plastic rail used for horse shows might not contain a large animal if it escaped and asked for assurances. Cheval and other presenters responded that the animals regularly perform in large crowds, trainers and a personal veterinarian will attend, and organizers are open to additional mitigation measures.
The board also confirmed event dates for the production: July 24 (Tupac Equestrian Center) and July 25 (Alachua County Agricultural Center). Commissioners asked about insurance and rental clauses; staff said standard insurance and facility rental requirements apply and that operators would be responsible for damages per rental agreement.
What comes next: The event organizer and facility managers will coordinate final safety and insurance details in advance of the July dates; the county said it may, if desired, hire an on‑site veterinarian in addition to the animals’ personal veterinarian.
