EDCO Waste & Recycling updated the National City Council on June 2 about service rates, recycling and organics programs, saying a $1 (3.65%) increase for standard residential service will take effect July 1, 2026.
"These rates were part of a five‑year plan already approved in 2023," said Carl Sherbaum, EDCO general manager, who told the council the company also offers a 20% senior discount and a low‑volume silver bag option. Sherbaum highlighted EDCO’s diversion rate of roughly 49 percent and described how collected organics are processed in an anaerobic digester that produces renewable natural gas used to fuel collection trucks.
Sherbaum said EDCO expanded digester capacity with a state grant and that the company conducts education and outreach for compliance with SB 1383 (state organics diversion law) and AB 827 (commercial recycling). He noted free bulky‑item curbside collection and community cleanups as ongoing services.
Council members thanked EDCO for its partnership and requested follow‑up tours of the digester. Council Member Bush said he was satisfied with the service and praised EDCO staff and community events.
Financial context and next steps: Sherbaum and councilors discussed discount programs, tour availability, and community partnerships. The presentation did not include a council vote on the rate increase during the meeting; EDCO said the increase follows the five‑year schedule approved previously and is scheduled to be effective July 1, 2026.
