Resident urges Wayne County to oppose data centers and ask for moratorium; commissioners say statement forthcoming

A Clinton Township resident, Dr. James Zefran, used public comment at the May 21 Wayne County Commissioners meeting to ask the board to issue a public statement opposing data centers and related power plants and to impose at least a three‑year moratorium while municipalities update zoning and land‑development ordinances.
Zefran said he had discussed the matter with the county solicitor, who told him the county does not control municipal zoning, subdivision or land‑development ordinances; Zefran said he found that information helpful but still asked the Commissioners for a public statement opposing data centers.
Commissioner James Shook later told the meeting that a statement regarding data centers is being worked on by the Commissioners and “will be provided in the near future.” The comments were recorded during the public comment portion of the meeting; no formal vote on a moratorium or policy change was taken at the session.
The board recessed into an executive session later in the meeting to discuss potential litigation and personnel matters and then adjourned.
