St. Charles County commission notes about 600 RECA Act applicants; no new Weldon Springs monitoring updates

The St. Charles County Commission on Environmental Quality on March 10 discussed the recently approved RECA Act and heard that roughly 600 people had applied for related benefits while receiving no new updates on Weldon Springs monitoring.

Commissioner John Choinka said "approximately 600 people had applied, including his wife, and were waiting for a response," describing local interest in the federal program and potential implications for residents in and around Weldon Springs. The commission did not record any detailed local eligibility figures or timelines for decisions.

Commissioner Rhonda Ferrett reported that a Peruque Stream Team town hall she attended drew about 70 people, noting continued community engagement on local stream and watershed issues. Staff member Ryan Tilley, representing the Division of Environmental Health and Protection, said there was "nothing new to report" on division business at this meeting. Under old business, Commissioner Jeff Langston similarly reported "nothing new to report" on Weldon Springs monitoring.

The commission approved minutes from its Dec. 3, 2025 meeting on a motion by Commissioner Jeff Langston and a second from Commissioner Rhonda Ferrett; the approval was unanimous. Commissioner John Choinka moved to adjourn the meeting at about 6:20 p.m.; Commissioner Langston seconded and the meeting ended.

The commission did not take further formal action on Weldon Springs monitoring during this session, nor did it provide additional detail about the RECA Act application review timeline; those matters remain pending.
