Cavalier County appoints Public Health board member, supports rural-health grant ideas and approves routine business

During the meeting Steph Welsh of Public Health presented a booklet from the Youth for Change Summit at Langdon Area High School, which focused on tobacco-prevention education; the completed student puzzle display is now on public view outside the Public Health office in the courthouse. Welsh also outlined ideas for a Rural Healthcare Grant application, suggesting the courthouse as an indoor walking space and as a potential site for a screening kiosk; the commissioners expressed full support for pursuing the grant.
Treasurer Cindy Stremick told the board a Special County Highway certificate of deposit will mature this month; commissioners voted to cash the CD and deposit the interest into County General. Chairman Austin Lafrenz said an Emergency Fire Danger Proclamation signed the previous week will require annual renewal; the board directed that the proclamation be placed on the March agenda each year to ensure it is available if needed.
Commissioner Nick Moser reported on proposed updates to the Cavalier County Planning & Zoning Regulations influenced by recent state legislation; the board agreed to hold a joint meeting with the Planning & Zoning Board to review required changes. Finally, commissioners reviewed and approved the audit of claims — a multi-page list of vendor and payroll payments and grant pass-throughs — after a motion by Greg Goodman and second by Nick Moser.
What happens next: Kreklau will join the Public Health District Board; county staff will prepare the Rural Healthcare Grant application materials and schedule the joint planning-and-zoning meeting to consider regulatory updates. The board adjourned at 10:45 a.m.
