Conservation group offers chestnut seedlings; Select Board discusses planting sites

Representatives of the Great Works Regional Land Trust (GWRLT) contacted the town offering one or two disease-resistant American Chestnut seedlings to support regional repopulation efforts, the Select Board heard on March 17.
The board expressed enthusiasm and discussed potential planting sites. Selectperson Michael Johnson Jr. suggested Abbott Farm because the trees will grow large and need room and consistent water during early growth. Dwayne Morin said transplanting will occur in May, giving the board time to select suitable locations.
No formal vote was required or taken; the board will finalize planting sites before transplanting in May.
