Bern supervisors ratify snow emergency and grant extension, accept police auction bids and sponsor health grant

At its Feb. 2 meeting the Bern Township Board of Supervisors approved routine financial and administrative items, ratified emergency actions taken during a recent storm, and authorized several intergovernmental and procurement-related measures.
The board accepted the Treasurer's report subject to audit; balances reported were General Fund $1,693,208.30, State Account $547,043.71, PLGIT $67,029.50, Certificates of Deposit $545,887.95, with expenses of $42,963.40. The consent agenda was approved on a motion by Supervisor Jeff Thompson and second by Mr. Eveland.
Township Manager Brian Potts told the board he signed and returned a DEP Section 902 Equipment Grant extension letter, which sets a new deadline of May 5, 2021; supervisors ratified the extension. The board also ratified a previously declared snow emergency for the recent storm.
Chief Wesley Waugh requested approval to accept the highest bids from completed Municibid auctions for three police vehicles and to advance to the second-highest bidder if a highest bidder defaults; supervisors approved that approach. The board also agreed to sponsor a Penn State Health Cath Lab grant, as requested by Penn State Health, with the township acting as grantee and Penn State Health as subgrantee; Mr. Potts said the cooperation agreement would include indemnification of Bern Township by Penn State Health.
On event approvals, the board agreed there was 'no objection' to the Erik Hirner Memorial Motorcycle Ride passing through Bern Township on May 30, 2021—a phrasing PennDOT required for its review—rather than a formal municipal approval. The supervisors appointed Kathy Larue to a two-year alternate position on the Zoning Hearing Board (term ending in 2021 because the seat was vacant last year). The meeting adjourned at 7:34 PM.
