Board reviews three recent bite incidents; one dog barred from returning to Mahwah

Mahwah Health Department reported three bite incidents: unrestrained Rottweilers running at large, an unlicensed Hungarian Puli whose owner licensed the dog, and a pit bull adopted from Pitties & Pals Rescue returned to the rescue and barred from Mahwah after severe injuries to another animal.
The Mahwah Health Department told the Board of Health on March 10 that staff investigated three animal-bite incidents occurring in town.
Principal REHS Mr. Robe described the first incident at a Winter Place residence where four Rottweilers were let out; a delivery person left a side gate unsecured and the dogs were later seen running at large on Hillside Avenue. The owner was warned about potential consequences if animals were observed running at large again. A second incident on Farmstead Road involved a Hungarian Puli; two leashed residents were walking dogs when an altercation resulted in a bite. Mr. Robe said the Puli was not licensed at the time; the owner has since licensed the animal and the violation was abated. The third incident involved a three-year-old pit bull recently adopted from Pitties & Pals Rescue; because of the severity of injuries to the other animal, Mr. Robe said the dog was returned to the rescue and is not permitted to return to Mahwah. Mr. Robe shared photos of the bitten animal with board members.
Mr. Robe said his field visit to the Winter Place address was conducted with Tyco Animal Control. The Board did not record additional enforcement steps beyond the owner warning and the return ban for the pit bull; a summons and court date were recorded elsewhere in the meeting related to a separate denied-coop inspection (133 Catherine Ave).
